Shortly after the civil war begins, Fernando, the protagonist of the novel, the son of an influential landowners, comes from Cijares (Badajoz) to Madrid to escape the repression in Extremadura. He travels with what is left of his family, those saved from death. When he reaches Madrid, he establishes relations with different kinds of people: co-workers and senior politicians, among which is the last prime minister of the Republic, Dr. Juan Negrin. Obligated through his work, he will become involved in various adventures and will come to see the evolution of the war and its effects on Madrid and Badajoz, Barcelona and Valencia. These experiences will shake his deepest convictions and will aid in adopting his own position, in the face of relatives and the environment around him, which has its main focus in the search for a negotiated peace, which should be generous to both sides.
