the so-called 'canon tables' of the christian gospels are an absolutely remarkable feature of the early, late antique, and medieval christian manuscript cultures of east and west, the invention of which is commonly attributed to eusebius and dated to first decades of the fourth century ad. intended to host a technical device for structuring, organizing, and navigating the four gospels united in a single codex - and, in doing so, building upon and bringing to completion previous endeavours - the canon tables were apparently from the beginning a highly complex combination of text, numbers and images, that became an integral and fixed part of all the manuscripts containing the four gospels as sacred scripture of the christians and can be seen as exemplary for the formation, development and spreading of a specific christian manuscript culture across east and west ad 300 and 800.

in the footsteps of carl nordenfalk's masterly publication of 1938 and few following contributions, this book offers an updated overview on the topic of 'canon tables' in a comparative perspective and with a precise look at their context of origin, their visual appearance, their meaning, function and their usage in different times, domains, and cultures.

  • the theme 'journey' is common in every play but it is explored from different angles; we glimpse understandings of the journey in search of soul, of self, of healing, of sacred meaning, of the possible, even of transformation.

one of the captivating aspects of this book is that, while it's about plays and their stories, it also challenges the reader to rethink and re-imagine his/her own story. it is indeed a literary work of art. -ann louise gilligan

this is a book of insight and imagination. it is a literary tour de force, where 28 irish plays are examined and their rich cultural context exposed in a way that educates and excites. to read anne o'reilly's analysis leaves one longing to return to theatre and to play. while the text is utterly readable, the ideas shared are profound.

  • flash explores flash's power to reveal shocking social conditions, its impact on the representation of race, its illumination of what would otherwise remain hidden in darkness, and its capacity to put on display the most mundane corners of everyday life. it looks at flash's distinct aesthetics, examines how paparazzi chase celebrities, how flash is intimately linked to crime, how flash has been used to light up - and interrupt - countless family gatherings, how flash can 'stop time' allowing one to photograph rapidly moving objects or freeze in a strobe, and it considers the biggest flash of all, the atomic bomb.

examining the work of professionals and amateurs, news hounds and art photographers, photographers of crime and of wildlife, the volume builds a picture of flash's place in popular culture, and its role in literature and film. generously illustrated throughout, flash brings out the central role of this medium to the history of photography and challenges some commonly held ideas about the nature of photography itself.
(1)'> flash presents a fascinating cultural history of flash photography, from its mid-nineteenth century beginnings to the present day. all photography requires light, but the light of flash photography is quite distinctive: artificial, sudden, shocking, intrusive, and extraordinarily bright. associated with revelation and wonder, it has been linked to the sublimity of lightning. yet it has also been reviled: it's inseparable from anxieties about intrusion and violence, it creates a visual disturbance, and its effects are often harsh and create exaggerated contrasts.

  • hellenistic artworks are celebrated for innovations such as narrative, characterization, and description. the most striking examples are works associated with the hellenistic courts. their revolutionary appearance is usually attributed to alexander the great's conquest of the near east, the start of the hellenistic kingdoms, and greek-eastern interactions. in rhetoric and innovation in hellenistic art, kristen seaman offers a new approach to hellenistic art by investigating an internal development in greek cultural production, notably, advances in rhetoric. rhetorical education taught kings, artists, and courtiers how to be greek, giving them a common intellectual and cultural background from which they approached art. seaman explores how rhetorical techniques helped artists and their royal patrons construct hellenism through their innovative art in the scholarly atmospheres of pergamon and alexandria. drawing upon artistic, literary, and historical evidence, this interdisciplinary study will be of interest to students and scholars in art and archaeology, classics, and ancient history.
