the so-called 'canon tables' of the christian gospels are an absolutely remarkable feature of the early, late antique, and medieval christian manuscript cultures of east and west, the invention of which is commonly attributed to eusebius and dated to first decades of the fourth century ad. intended to host a technical device for structuring, organizing, and navigating the four gospels united in a single codex - and, in doing so, building upon and bringing to completion previous endeavours - the canon tables were apparently from the beginning a highly complex combination of text, numbers and images, that became an integral and fixed part of all the manuscripts containing the four gospels as sacred scripture of the christians and can be seen as exemplary for the formation, development and spreading of a specific christian manuscript culture across east and west ad 300 and 800.

in the footsteps of carl nordenfalk's masterly publication of 1938 and few following contributions, this book offers an updated overview on the topic of 'canon tables' in a comparative perspective and with a precise look at their context of origin, their visual appearance, their meaning, function and their usage in different times, domains, and cultures.

  • hilaire-germain-edgar degas (1834-1917) was a french painter, draftsman, printmaker and sculptor celebrated for his scenes of modern life, from the cabaret concert to the racetrack to the ballet, the subject for which he is best known. academically trained, degas emulated old master and 19th-century predecessors; at the same time, he embraced radically new subjects, compositions and techniques. (来源indiebound) (2)'> a towering figure in 19th-century art, degas is best known as a painter and chronicler of the ballet. yet his work in monotype reveals the true extent of his restless experimentation. in the mid-1870s, degas was introduced to the monotype process, a technique in which the artist draws in ink on a metal plate that is then run through a press, typically resulting in a single print. degas embraced the medium with enormous enthusiasm, inventing a new repertoire of mark-making that included wiping, scraping, scratching, fingerprinting and rendering via removal. the resulting works are characterized by enigmatic and mutable forms, luminous passages emerging from darkness and a heightened tactility. taking the monotype process to radical ends, degas explored a variety of subjects, including city dwellers in motion; harshly illuminated cafe singers, ballet dancers on and offstage, women in intimate settings; and evanescent landscapes. with this medium, degas is at his most modern, liberating drawing from tradition, depicting the body in new and daring ways, and boldly engaging the possibilities of abstraction. published to accompany an exhibition at the museum of modern art, this richly illustrated catalogue presents approximately 120 monotypes along with some 60 related works, including paintings, drawings, pastels, sketchbooks and prints. essays and detailed studies by curators, scholars and conservators explore the creative potency of degas' rarely seen monotypes, and highlight their impact on his wider practice.

this book explores the formative correlations and inventive transmissions of anglophone arab representations ranging from early-twentieth-century mahjar writings to contemporary transnational palestinian resistance art. tracing multiple beginnings and seminal intertexts, the comparative study of dissonant truth-making presents critical readings in which the notion of cross-cultural translation gets displaced and strategic unreliability advances to an essential quality of the discussed works' aesthetic devices and ethical concerns. questioning conventional interpretive approaches, it shows what anglophone arab studies are and what they can become from a radically decentered relational point of view.

  • an innovative approach to the semantics of logic, proof-theoretic semantics seeks the meaning of propositions and logical connectives within a system of inference. gerhard gentzen invented proof-theoretic semantics in the early 1930s, and dag prawitz, the author of this study, extended its analytic proofs to systems of natural deduction. prawitz's theories form the basis of intuitionistic type theory, and his inversion principle constitutes the foundation of most modern accounts of proof-theoretic semantics. the concept of natural deduction follows a truly natural progression, establishing the relationship between a noteworthy systematization and the interpretation of logical signs. as this survey explains, the deduction's principles allow it to proceed in a direct fashion -- a manner that permits every natural deduction's transformation into the equivalent of normal form theorem. a basic result in proof theory, the normal form theorem was established by gentzen for the calculi of sequents. the proof of this result for systems of natural deduction is in many ways simpler and more illuminating than alternative methods. this study offers clear illustrations of the proof and numerous examples of its advantages. show more (1)

  • in 1859 the popular novelist wilkie collins wrote of a ghostly woman, dressed from head to toe in white garments, laying her cold, thin hand on the shoulder of a young man as he walked home late one evening. his novel the woman in white became hugely successful and popularised a style of writing that came to be known as sensation fiction. this companion highlights the energy, the impact and the inventiveness of the novels that were written in 'sensational' style, including the work of mary elizabeth braddon, mrs henry wood and florence marryat. it contains fifteen specially-commissioned essays and includes a chronology and a guide to further reading. accessible yet rigorous, this companion questions what influenced the shape and texture of the sensation novel, and what its repercussions were both in the nineteenth century and up to the present day (1)

  • publishing scholarly editions offers new intellectual tools for publishing digital editions that bring readers closer to the experimental practices of literature, editing, and reading. after the introduction (section 1), sections 2 and 3 frame intentionality and data analysis as intersubjective, interrelated, and illustrative of experience-as-experimentation. these ideas are demonstrated in two editorial exhibitions of nineteenth-century works: herman melville's billy budd, sailor, and the anti-slavery anthology the bow in the cloud, edited by mary anne rawson. section 4 uses pragmatism to rethink editorial principles and data modelling, arguing for a broader conception of the edition rooted in data collections and multimedia experience. the conclusion (section 5) draws attention to the challenges of publishing digital editions, and why digital editions have failed to be supported by the publishing industry. if publications are conceived as pragmatic inventions based on reliable, open-access data collections, then editing can embrace the critical, aesthetic, and experimental affordances of editions of experience (1)
  • simultaneously a handbook and a critique of one, beyond craft combines an orientation to the field of creative writing with an insight into current scholarship surrounding creative writing pedagogy. a much-needed alternative to the traditional craft guide, this text pairs advice and exercises on composition with an illuminating commentary on the issues surrounding these very techniques. teaching the craft whilst apprising students of the issues of craft pedagogy, this book allows them to gain an awareness of how current pedagogy comes at the expense of larger and increasingly relevant cultural concerns. westbrook and ryan bring emerging writers into the larger conversations that define the field, inviting them to: - contextualize their own writing practices and educational experiences in relation to the history of creative writing as an academic discipline. - determine how new critical lore and romantic mythology may affect—even distort—their understanding of literary production. - critically examine their notions of authorship, collaboration, and invention in relation to contemporary literary and rhetorical theory. - understand and evaluate the economic, social, political, and professional challenges facing creative writers today. - analyze the contemporary literary marketplace not only to identify potential publication contexts but also to understand how issues of diversity and bias affect writing communities. - reflect on how increasingly rapid technological developments may affect their own writing and the future of literature. earnestly self-aware throughout, beyond craft both inducts new writers into the field of creative writing and infuses them with an understanding of the wider dialogue surrounding their craft (1)

  • with a new introduction for the paperback. london is a supreme achievement of civilization. it offers fulfilments of body and soul, encourages discovery and invention. it is a place of freedom, multiplicity and co-existence. it is a liberal city, which means it stands for values now in peril. london has also become its own worst enemy, testing to destruction the idea that the free market alone can build a city, a fantastical wealth machine that denies too many of its citizens a decent home or living. in this thought-provoking, fearless, funny and subversive book, rowan moore shows how london's strength depends on the creative and mutual interplay of three forces: people, business and state. to find responses to the challenges of the twenty-first century, london must rediscover its genius for popular action and bold public intervention. the global city above all others, london is the best place to understand the way the world's cities are changing. it could also be, in the shape of a living, churning city of more than eight million people, the most powerful counter-argument to the extremist politics of the present. show more (1)
