a comprehensive guide to mechanical wristwatches (1)
americans today are affectively polarized: they dislike and distrust those from the opposing political party more than they did in the past, with damaging consequences for their democracy. this element tests one strategy for ameliorating such animus: having ordinary democrats and republicans come together for cross-party political discussions. building on intergroup contact theory, the authors argue that such discussions will mitigate partisan animosity. using an original experiment, they find strong support for this hypothesis – affective polarization falls substantially among subjects who participate in heterogeneous discussion (relative to those who participate in either homogeneous political discussion or an apolitical control). this element also provides evidence for several of the mechanisms underlying these effects, and shows that they persist for at least one week after the initial experiment. these findings have considerable importance for efforts to ameliorate animus in the mass public, and for understanding american politics more broadly (1)
as the countdown to mma makutsi's wedding begins, all is not as it should be at the no.1 ladies' detective agency. while investigating unpleasant occurrences on a southern cattle-post, mma ramotswe, always on the side of the weak against the strong, has reason to reflect on rule no.3 of the principles of private detection: never lie to the client. apprentice mechanic charlie seems to be avoiding certain important responsibilities. and as mma makutsi's big day approaches, her nemesis violet sephotho is casting her net wider: by standing for election which could spell trouble for the entire nation. but as friends and family gather under starry african night skies, it turns out that even the most perplexing of apparitions - and the most shocking of crimes - may yield to rational explanation. and, of course, to mma ramotswe's inimitable way with love, intuition and redbush tea. show more (1)
cognitive neuroscientists have started to uncover the neural substrates, systems, and mechanisms enabling us to prioritize the processing of certain sensory information over other, currently less-relevant, inputs. however, there is still a large gap between the knowledge generated in the laboratory and its application to real-life problems of attention as when, for example, interface operators are multi-tasking. in this element, laboratory studies on crossmodal attention (both behavioural/psychophysical and cognitive neuroscience) are situated within the applied context of driving. we contrast the often idiosyncratic conditions favoured by much of the laboratory research, typically using a few popular paradigms involving simplified experimental conditions, with the noisy, multisensory, real-world environments filled with complex, intrinsically-meaningful stimuli. by drawing attention to the differences between basic and applied studies in the context of driving, we highlight a number of important issues and neglected areas of research as far as the study of crossmodal attention is concerned (1)
complaints are often made that recommendations about how to rear children are contradictory and, therefore, not helpful. in this element we survey the history of theory and research relevant to childrearing in an attempt to show how apparent differences can be resolved. we suggest that socialization occurs in different domains, with each domain fostering socialization in a different way. thus there is no all-purpose principle or mechanism of socialization but, rather, different forms of relationship between child and agent that serve a different function, involve different rules for effecting behavior change, and facilitate different outcomes. using this framework, we survey research relevant to different domains, including the roles played by parents, siblings, and peers in the socialization process. we follow this with a discussion of how culture and biology make their contribution to an understanding of domains of socialization (1)
employing a practical, learn by doing approach, this first-rate text fosters the development of the skills beyond the pure mathematics needed to set up and manipulate mathematical models. the author draws on a diversity of fields -- including science, engineering, and operations research -- to provide over 100 reality-based examples. students learn from the examples by applying mathematical methods to formulate, analyze, and criticize models. extensive documentation, consisting of over 150 references, supplements the models, encouraging further research on models of particular interest. the lively and accessible text requires only minimal scientific background. designed for senior college or beginning graduate-level students, it assumes only elementary calculus and basic probability theory for the first part, and ordinary differential equations and continuous probability for the second section. all problems require students to study and create models, encouraging their active participation rather than a mechanical approach. beyond the classroom, this volume will prove interesting and rewarding to anyone concerned with the development of mathematical models or the application of modeling to problem solving in a wide array of applications. show more (1)
even the simplest social interactions require us to gather, integrate, and act upon, multiple streams of information about others and our surroundings. in this element, we discuss how perceptual processes provide us with an accurate account of action-relevant information in social contexts. we overview contemporary theories and research that explores how: (1) individuals perceive others' mental states and actions, (2) individuals perceive affordances for themselves, others, and the dyad, and (3) how social contexts guide our attention to modulate what we perceive. finally, we review work on the cognitive mechanisms that make joint action possible and discuss their links to perception (1)
examining the interconnections between genes and culture is crucial for a more complete understanding of psychological processes. genetic predispositions may predict different outcomes depending on one's cultural context, and culture may predict different outcomes depending on genetic predispositions - that is, genes and culture interact. less is understood, however, about how genes and culture interact, or the psychological mechanisms through which gene-culture interactions occur. in this element, heewon kwon and joni y. sasaki review key findings and theories in gene-culture interaction research. they then go on to discuss current issues and future directions in gene-culture research that may illuminate the path toward an explanatory framework (1)
how does experience change the way we perceive the world? this element explores the interaction between perception and experience by studying perceptual experts, people who specialize in recognizing objects such as birds, automobiles, dogs. we propose perceptual expertise promotes a downward shift in object recognition where experts recognize objects in their domain of expertise at a more specific level than novices. to support this claim, we examine the recognition abilities and brain mechanisms of real-world experts. we discuss the acquisition of expertise by tracing the cognitive and neural changes that occur as a novice becomes an expert through training and experience. next, we look “under the hood” of expertise and examine the perceptual features that experts bring to bear to facilitate their fast, accurate, and specific recognition. the final section considers the future of human expertise as deep learning models and artificial intelligence compete with human experts in medical diagnosis (1)
in 1922, when joseph-armand bombardier was fifteen years old he built his first snow vehicle. he had always loved to tinker with motors and make things go, and he dreamed of building a vehicle that could go over snow. his first attempt, using a model t ford engine and a wooden propeller, worked well. to joseph-armand’s mind, anyhow. not so much his father, who made him take the contraption apart. over the years, joseph-armand dreamed of becoming a great mechanic and inventing machines. but when his young son died of a fever because it was impossible to get to the hospital over the snow-covered roads, joseph-armand applied his single-minded determination to building a vehicle that could go over snow. it took years, but he accomplished his goal. his invention changed the way people in snow country lived. inaccessible roads could now be travelled, taking patients to hospitals, doctors and priests to the needy, children to school, and even mail to residents (1)
in mechanical engineer, carefully leveled text and vibrant, full-color photographs take early fluent readers on an informational interview with a mechanical engineer. readers learn about the day-to-day responsibilities and challenges of this career and the things they can do now to prepare for work as a mechanical engineer. an infographic illustrates the tools of the trade, and an activity offers kids an opportunity to extend discovery. children can learn more about mechanical engineers online using our safe search engine that provides relevant, age-appropriate websites. mechanical engineer also features reading tips for teachers and parents, a table of contents, a glossary, and an index.mechanical engineer is part of jump!’s stem careers series (1)
in the mathematical subfield of numerical analysis, interpolation is a procedure that assists in "reading between the lines" in a set of tables by constructing new data points from existing points. this rigorous presentation employs only formulas for which it is possible to calculate error limits. subjects include displacement symbols and differences, divided differences, formulas of interpolation, factorial coefficients, numerical differentiation, and construction of tables. additional topics include inverse interpolation, elementary methods of summation, repeated summation, mechanical quadrature, numerical integration of differential equations, the calculus of symbols, interpolation with several variables, and mechanical cubature. 1950 edition. show more (1)
newborn imitation has recently become the focus of a major controversy in the human sciences. new studies have reexamined the evidence and found it wanting. imitation has been regarded as a crucial capability of neonates ever since 1977, when two american psychologists first published experiments appearing to demonstrate that babies at birth are able to copy a variety of facial movements. the findings overturned decades of assumptions about the competence of newborns. but what if claims for newborn imitation are not true? influential theories about the mechanisms underlying imitation, the role of mirror neurons, the nature of the self and of infant mental states, will all have to be modified or abandoned if it turns out that babies cannot imitate at birth. this element offers a critical assessment of those theories and the stakes involved (1)

santa's got a busy day ahead and you can join in the festive fun! inbusy santa, young children can push, pull and turn the tabs to help him wrap up the presents, load up the sleigh, fly through the sky and deliver all the parcels on christmas eve.the perfect gift for toddlers with inquisitive fingers and minds, they will love playing with the easy-to-handle mechanisms in this bright and colourful board book with gently rhyming text and magical illustrations by ag jatkowska.keep little ones busy with more festive favourites from the busy books series:busy elves, busy christmas, and busy nativity (1)
the 2016 us election highlighted the potential for foreign governments to employ social media for strategic advantages, but the particular mechanisms through which social media affect international politics are underdeveloped. this element shows that the populace often seeks to navigate complex issues of foreign policy through social media, which can amplify information and tilt the balance of support on these issues. in this context, the open media environment of a democracy is particularly susceptible to foreign influence whereas the comparatively closed media environment of a non-democracy provides efficient ways for these governments to promote regime survival (1)
the covid-19 pandemic triggered the first global public health emergency since 1918, the greatest economic crisis since the great depression, and the greatest geopolitical tensions in decades. global governance mechanisms failed. yet, east asian countries (with caveats) managed to control covid-19 better than most other countries and to increase their cooperation toward economic integration, despite their position on the security frontline. what explains this east asian covid paradox in a region devoid of strong regional institutions? this element argues that high levels of institutional preparation, social cohesion, and global strategic reinforcement in a context of situational convergence explain the results. it relies on high-level interviews and case studies across the region (1)
the distinction between humans and the natural world is an artefact and more a matter of linguistic communication than a conceptual separation. this element proposes ecosemiotics as an epistemological tool to better understand the relationship between human and natural processes. ecosemiotics with its affinity to the humanities, is presented here as the best disciplinary approach for interpreting complex environmental conditions for a broad audience, across a multitude of temporal and spatial scales. it is proposed as an intellectual bridge between divergent sciences to incorporate within a unique framework different paradigms. the ecosemiotic paradigm helps to explain how organisms interact with their external environments using mechanisms common to all living beings that capture external information and matter for internal usage. this paradigm can be applied in all the circumstances where a living being (man, animal, plant, fungi, etc.) performs processes to stay alive (1)
