gender is a highly salient and important social group that shapes how children interact with others and how they are treated by others. in this element, we offer an overview and review of the research on gender development in childhood from a developmental science perspective. we first define gender and the related concepts of sex and gender identity. second, we discuss how variations in cultural context shape gender development around the world and how variations within gender groups add to the complexity of gender identity development. third, we discuss major theoretical perspectives in developmental science for studying child gender. fourth, we examine differences and similarities between girls and boys using the latest meta-analytic evidence. fifth, we discuss the development of gender, gender identity, and gender socialization throughout infancy, early childhood, and middle childhood. we conclude with a discussion of future directions for the study of gender development in childhood (1)

social disparities tied to social group membership(s) are prevalent and persistent within mainstream institutions (e.g., schools/workplaces). accordingly, psychological science has harnessed selves - which are malleable and meaningfully shaped by social group membership(s) - as solutions to inequality. we propose and review evidence that theoretical and applied impacts of leveraging 'selves as solutions' can be furthered through the use of a stigma and strengths framework. specifically, this framework conceptualizes selves in their fuller complexity, allowing the same social group membership to be associated with stigma, risk, and devaluation as well as strengths, resilience, and pride. we provide evidence that by enacting policies and practices that (a) reduce/minimize stigma and (b) recognize/include strengths, mainstream institutions can more fully mitigate social disparities tied to inclusion, achievement and well-being. using social groups that vary in status/power we examine implications of this framework including the potential to foster positive, recursive, and intergroup impacts on social inequalities (1)

this element examines just how much the public knows about some of america's most stigmatized social groups, who comprise 40.3% of the population, and evaluates whether misinformation matters for shaping policy attitudes and candidate support. the authors design and field an original survey containing large national samples of black, latino, asian, muslim, and white americans, and include measures of misinformation designed to assess the amount of factual information that individuals possess about these groups. they find that republicans, whites, the most racially resentful, and consumers of conservative news outlets are the most likely to be misinformed about socially marginalized groups. their analysis also indicates that misinformation predicts hostile policy support on racialized issues; it is also positively correlated with support for trump. they then conducted three studies aimed at correcting misinformation. their research speaks to the prospects of a well-functioning democracy, and its ramifications on the most marginalized (1)
this element presents original research into how young people interact with violent extremist material, including terrorist propaganda, when online. it explores a series of emotional and behavioural responses that challenge assumptions that terror or trauma are the primary emotional responses to these online environments. it situates young people's emotional responses within a social framework, revealing them to have a relatively sophisticated relationship with violent extremism on social media that challenges simplistic concerns about processes of radicalisation. the element draws on four years of research, including quantitative surveys and qualitative focus groups with young people, and presents a unique perspective drawn from young people's experiences (1)

what are the social and political consequences of poor state governance and low state legitimacy? under what conditions does lynching – lethal, extralegal group violence to punish offenses to the community – become an acceptable practice? we argue lynching emerges when neither the state nor its challengers have a monopoly over legitimate authority. when authority is contested or ambiguous, mass punishment for transgressions can emerge that is public, brutal, and requires broad participation. using new cross-national data, we demonstrate lynching is a persistent problem in dozens of countries over the last four decades. drawing on original survey and interview data from haiti and south africa, we show how lynching emerges and becomes accepted. specifically, support for lynching most likely occurs in one of three conditions: when states fail to provide governance, when non-state actors provide social services, or when neighbors must rely on self-help (1)
widespread belief in the benefits of empathy and its healing power is evident in public discourse and across diverse news and social media outlets around the world. yet research reveals that empathy can sometimes have adverse effects on individuals' intergroup attitudes and behavior. a link between empathy and concerns with negative evaluation helps explain why empathy can backfire. accordingly, using the minimization of evaluative concerns as an organizing principle, the author makes recommendations regarding when and how to encourage empathy in intergroup contexts, so that its potential to foster stronger social bonds across group boundaries can be fully realized (1)
